B-ball teams play in GR Thurs.

The Green River High School boys and girls basketball teams went to Gillette Friday to take on Thunder Basin in a non-conference game.

Both teams left with a loss. The boys’ game ended 81-57, while the girls lost in a close 60-50 contest.

For head coach Laurie Ivie, the loss came from the Wolves’ inability to play four solid quarters and problems with turnovers throughout the game.

“We played a great first half,” she said. “But, we came out after halftime and started the third quarter with back-to-back turnovers and continued making careless errors. We ended the game with 30 total turnovers -- far, far too many.”

However, the loss didn’t come without positive aspects. Ivie said the team’s rebounding improved and they managed to out rebound Thunder Basin.

For the girls, head girls coach Rick Carroll chalks the loss up to turnovers as well, but said the girls did a much better job playing consistent basketball.

“They were pretty consistent throughout the game,” Carroll said. “We really had a close game.”

The only times the girls struggled were a few minutes as the start of the game and the last 5 minutes of the fourth quarter. Carroll said the girls didn’t handle the pressure Thunder Basin brought, but were able to break the Lady Bolts’ press a few times throughout the game. Carroll also thinks the team was a little nervous at the start of the game, something he wants to work on in the coming weeks.

The teams will get a chance to play at home Thursday, as Green River hosts Evanston for the annual military appreciation night. The games also mark the start of conference play. The girls game starts at 6 p.m., while the boys’ game starts at 7:30 p.m.

“The military appreciation game is always a special night for our school, our team, and our community,” Ivie said.

Ivie said she’s working on making sure the team doesn’t turnover the ball as much, while placing an emphasis on taking better care of the ball.

“Defense and rebounding will also be two areas we’ll continue to spend significant amounts of time on,” she said.

Carroll expects Evanston to make for an exciting girls’ game to watch.

“We’re excited,” he said. “It will be a fun night.”

Following Thursday’s games, the teams will travel to Jackson for action Saturday.
