Swimmers take 2nd at State

For the second year in a row, the Lady Wolves swimming team has come home with a second place trophy from State.

The Lady Wolves went into State with the goal of placing in the top three and were happy to accomplish that goal again. Laramie High School took first place for a third year in a row, which was expected, due to how dominant they had been throughout the season.

"Everybody was excited about getting second," head coach Colleen Seiloff said. "We knew we'd have to work hard at it to beat Cheyenne Central and Campbell County."

Seiloff said both of those teams are tough competitors and high-quality teams.

With Laramie continuing to dominate the sport, the Lady Wolves focused on getting second place.

Seiloff said she was pleased with the way the Lady Wolves swam during the preliminary event, which took place Friday, and during finals, which took place Saturday.

"I was pleased with the way they swam," Seiloff said. "They really fought hard."

On Friday, the Lady Wolves worked hard to get those qualifying spots and on Saturday they continued to fight to either advance a spot or keep their spot.

For seniors Sydni Sanders, Kaycee Olsen, Adrienne Merrick and Cherylann Moritz, it was their last State swim and the last swim of their high-school careers. Sanders and Olsen made it to the finals, while Merrick and Moritz came up short.

The Wyoming Coaches' Association under the Wyoming High School Activities Association named Hailey Uhrig to the All-State list after she finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke. According to these guidelines, the All-State honor is given to the top two finishers in each event and the winning relay team in each class at the state meet.

Seiloff said she was proud of Uhrig who, despite having mono, still broke the school record in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Under the Wyoming Swim Coaches' Association guidelines, the top three in each event receive All-State honors, she said.

Those obtaining All-State honors under these guidelines in the relays were the second-place, 200-yard medley relay team consisting of Lauren Jensen, Uhrig, Lauren Lee, Lilly Munoz, the third place, the 200-yard freestyle relay team consisting of Olsen, Munoz, Alexa Lauze and Sanders.

Those obtaining All-State honors in the individual events were Jensen with a third-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, Uhrig in the 100-yard breaststroke, and Munoz in the 100-yard breaststroke.

The 200-yard medley relay team also broke a school record with a time of 1:49.76

Seiloff said all of the Lady Wolves worked hard and Jensen obtained a personal best in the 100-yard backstroke.

For the Lady Wolves, this was the last season they will swim in the 4A Division.

"It was a good way to end it," Seiloff said.

She said the team is looking forward to the tough competition the 3A division will bring next year.
