Wolves football takes loss in Jackson

The Wolves football had a tough loss against Jackson last Friday falling, 47-0.

The 1-3 Green River Wolves traveled to Jackson this past Friday to take on the 2-2 Jackson Broncs and the states leading rusher 5’ 8” 160 lb. senior Jaden Cox who is averaging more 200 yards rushing per game.

Head coach Marty Wrage said it was a tough game in Jackson.

Cox who was rested for part of the second half carried the ball 23 times for 179 yards for two touchdowns and two fumbles, while their sophomore quarterback showed they can also pass the ball as he threw four touchdown passes.

Jackson also scored on a short run and a pass interception, which was returned 25 yards, which accounted for the final score and the 47-0 shutout.

The game started with Jackson getting an excellent 51-yard kickoff return, but after Cox started with a short run he was stopped by Payton Tucker the 3A’s leading defensive player and Tayler Jensen, Cox fumbled the ball on his second carry and the Wolves Korbin Serrano recovered the ball.

Green River’s offense was held to just 8 yards on three plays and they were not able to capitalize on the turnover and had to punt. Cox then carried the ball for more than 40 yards with Tucker, Jensen and J.D. Renfro leading the defense, but Jackson’s drive culminated in a 5-yard touchdown run by Cox, with the P.A.T. good the Broncs took a 7-0 lead.

On their next series, Green River fumbled the ball on the second play of the drive, with Jackson’s defense applying the pressure, and on their first play from scrimmage Jackson scored on a 39-yard pass completion and the P.A.T. was once again good and Jackson led, 14-0.

Green River’s offense was again shut down by Jackson on three plays and again had to punt. It looked like Green River may have caught a break when Jackson fumbled and the ball was recovered by Tucker, however Jackson stopped Green River on three and out and the Wolves were forced to punt.

Just two plays later, Cox busted free for his second touchdown of the first half and with the P.A.T. missed the Broncs led, 20-0.

Green River’s offense finally got going with a long drive, which included and excellent catch by Isaac Ruiz for 16 yards, an 8-yard run by quarterback Jachob Fuss and a 15-yard run by Jensen, but the Wolves offense bogged down and Jackson got the ball back without the Wolves scoring.

Cox then ran the ball on the first three plays for Jackson gaining 26 yards before Jackson scored on a 55-yard touchdown pass to make it 27-0 with the P.A.T. kick and the route was on.

Green River took over and ran five plays with penalties against both teams in the drive before Jackson intercepted a pass at the 10-yard line to stop the drive.

The Broncs again went to Cox on runs and then completed a 32-yard pass to up the score to 34-0 just before the half.

Green River got the ball to start the second half and got a 24-yard return of the kickoff from Ruiz. The Wolves were once again stymied by the Broncs defense on three and out and had to punt. On the next series, Cox carried the ball five times for 53 yards, before Jackson took the ball in from the 1-yard line to make it 40-0.

On Green River’s next possession, the Broncs defense rose to the occasion once more when they intercepted Green River’s second play from scrimmage and returned it 25 yards to make it 47-0.

The Wolves will return home next week to play the Evanston Red Devils.

“We are working hard to get ready for Evanston a team that keeps improving every week,” Wrage said. “They are a very athletic group that plays hard is very physical.  Special teams will be very important in this game. We have to establish the run early.”
