The Green River Urban Renewal/Main Street Agency would like to see Love’s support downtown Green River if the company is granted a conditional use permit and builds a truck stop west of Jamestown.
The organization’s comments were submitted to the county’s land use department July 23 by Sherry Bushman, the organization’s chair. According to the comments, the agency was approached by businesses concerned with the proposal. They recognize the commissioners are the decision makers, but state the agency is obligated to be the voice for small businesses in downtown Green River because they are near the proposed site.
The agency asks Love’s to partner with them in promoting Green River and businesses downtown.
“We are requesting as part of the process and being socially responsible [sic] to include promotions and advertisements at the Love’s location,” the comment form states.
The agency suggests an informational kiosk at the truck stop to guide travelers to the city. The agency also claims Green River businesses will lose revenue if Love’s is established, but is unaware of how much businesses will lose.
“We are also requesting Love’s to be a sponsor of our downtown events, as well as, improvements that will display a true partnership,” the comments state.
Bushman said the comments represent a group effort by the agency’s board of directors to be a voice for downtown businesses and encourage Love’s to partner with the agency.
When asked if she felt the comment should be incorporated into the conditional use permit, Bushman said she didn’t have an opinion because that opinion would need to come from the agency’s board of directors collectively. She also said the agency hasn’t been in contact with representatives of Love’s.
The public comment period was extended after meetings for the conditional use permit were postponed to September. The deadline for comments on the conditional use permit is Sept. 5.
