Truck stop hearing postponed

The Sweetwater County Land Use Office was forced to postpone the Planning and Zoning Commission’s hearing regarding a proposed Love’s Travel Stop near Jamestown.

The hearing was canceled because a legal publication was not published on time in the Rock Springs Rocket Miner, the county’s newspaper of record. This came after the newspaper shifted from daily publication to a twice-a-week schedule. The missed legal notice was intended to be published prior to the shift, but the notice was unintentionally held until the Rocket Miner’s July 17 edition, which misses the 30-day window required by state statute prior to a public hearing on the issue.

According to Jim Zimmerman, code enforcement specialist for the county, the hearings will be postponed to September. Originally, the planning and zoning hearing was scheduled to take place Aug. 14 at 10 a.m., with the Sweetwater County commissioners hearing the proposal a week later during their Aug. 20 meeting.

Written comments were due Aug. 9. Everything will need to be redone for the new meeting dates.

“One error, this was a costly one,” Zimmerman said.

Now, written comments will be due Sept. 5, with the planning and zoning commission hearing set for Sept. 11 and the commissioners’ hearing to take place Sept. 17.

Zimmerman said the county will have to resend notices mailed to residents near the proposed site, as well as a list of residents interested in the proposal requesting information about the meeting. Zimmerman said the office plans to send a letter explaining the postponement when it resends the information.
