10 advance to State track meet in Casper

This weekend the Green River girls and boys track team traveled west to Evanston to compete in the 4A West Regional Track Championships.

The team competed against Kelly Walsh, Evanston, Rock Springs, Star Valley, Jackson, Riverton and Cody. The top eight finishers in each event qualify for State, except in the relays, where the top four teams qualify.

The young Wolves head coach Dan Hansen felt that his team “competed pretty well, but there were a few kids that were a little short of qualifying. Hansen said with the new conference alignment, the conference “has become stronger as a whole.”

Those that qualified for the boys are Marcos Valerio, Drew Gibson, Hayden Roberts, Greg Sherwin and Alex Marius, while Erika Wilson, Kaisa Arnell, Lillian Munoz, Mariyah Brady and Faith Bartashnick qualified for the Lady Wolves.

Valerio led the way as he has all season as the senior runner qualified in three events the 800 meter, the 1,600 meter and the 3,200 meter, fellow runner Drew Gibson, a junior, qualified in two events the 800 meter and the 1,600 meter as did freshman Hayden Roberts for the boys in two hurdle events.

Brady, a junior, was the only double qualifier for the girls in the 100-meter dash and the long jump.

For the boys, Sherwin qualified in the 3,200, while Marius qualified in the triple jump. For the girls, Arnell will run the 3,200, while Munoz will run the 300-meter hurdles, Erika Wilson will compete in the high jump and Faith Bartashnick will compete in the shot put at State.

The full results at regionals included Kalea Gibson and Angie Mackinon taking 18th and 19th respectively in the 800-meter run, both improving on their personal best with Gibson running 2:44.63 and Mackinon 2:45.32.

For the boys in the 800-meter run, Valerio ran his personal record in 2:02.14 with Gibson less than a 10th of a second behind in 2:02.46, while Kaden Gailey was just a second and a half of his best at 2:32.81.

Freshman Lillian Munoz led the hurdlers in ninth place at 17.67, followed by Mariyah Brady, a junior, in 11th and two freshman, Addee Beardsley and Emmalee Skinner, taking 17th and 19th in 18.81 and 19.03. Robert Hayden was the only hurdler running for the boys as he came in sixth close to his personal best in 17.34.

In the 100-meter sprint, Brady led the girls taking fifth in 13.31, followed by Chatney Tirrell 18th in 14.24 and Erika Wilson 19th in 14.35.

All three finishers for the boys were close to their personal best as Dylan Taylor finished 19th in 12.32, Tommy Clark was 22nd in 12.62 and Austin Fox 23rd in 12.67.

In the 300-meter hurdles, freshman Munoz had an excellent race as she led the way for Green Rivers girls lowering her personal best by about two and one-half seconds in taking third place in 48.76. Liberty Ferrell and Sara Wilson also ran their best in 1oth and 17th respectively with times of 50.77 and 54.35.

In the 300-meter hurdles for the boys, Hayden was again the lone entrant for Green River and again finished sixth in his fastest time at 43.27.

In the girls 200-meter, Beardsley took 18th followed by Skinner in 19th with times of 31.02 and 32.69 respectively. For the boys, Tommy Clark finished 19th and ran 25.89 in the 200 meter.

In the girls 3,200 run, senior Kaisa Arnell led the way finishing fifth in 12:35.54 with freshman Madison Yoak, lowering her seasons best by more than 12 seconds in taking ninth in 13.00.73, just missing qualifying for State.

For the boys in the 3,220- meter run, Green River got its lone first-place finish of the day as Marcos Valerio led the way followed by Greg Sherwin in sixth and Jared Westenskow in 14th and Evin Hansen in 15th.

In the girls 400-meter run, Chatney Tirrell took 16th, followed by Ashley Jensen in 18th. For the boys in the 400, Alex Hlad took two seconds off his personal best in finishing 16th in 58.20 with Devin Bobbitt 21st in 101:.23.

The girls 1,600 was led by Arnell for Green River, followed by Oak as they took 14th and 16th respectively in 6:01.06 and 6:07.46. And for the boys, Valerio, Gibson and Sherwin were the top finishers in fourth, fifth and 19th respectively, with Gibson dropping six seconds of his personal best.

The high jumpers for the girls were led by Erika Wilson who took third at 5-2, with Kalea Gibson taking 19th at 4-6. For the boys, Hayden cleared 5-6 for 14th, while Dylan Taylor cleared 5-4 for 16th.

Mariyah Brady took sixth in the long jump with a leap of 15-8 with Liberty Ferrell taking 18th at 13-4, followed by Karl Rasmussen in 23rd at 11-8 3/4. For the boys, Josh Sydney leapt 17-22 3/4 for 15th place, followed by Tommy Clark in 17th at 16-3 3/4, Jarrod Shoemaker in 18th at 14-9 and Russell Ferrell in 19th at 13-11.

In the triple jump, Sara Wilson went 29 1/4 for 13th, with Skinner in 15th at 27-5 1/2, while Alex Marius took sixth for the boys at his personal record of 40-1 3/4.

For the throwers in the girls discus, Kim Peterson was 12th, with a throw of 91-2, followed by Alana Mainers in 17th at 88, Natalie Wood in 24th at 74-3 and Faith Bartashnick in 28th at 68-3.

The boys discus throwers were led by Jacob Martinez in 10th place at 123-6, followed by Cole Murray in 17th at 108-10 and Baden Cantrell in 24th at 96-2.

In the shot put, Faith Bartashnick led in eighth place with her personal best of 32-1 1/2 to qualify for a trip to State, with Mainers in 20th at 27-3 1/2 and White in 23rd at 25-10 1/2.

For boys shot put, Jacob Martinez was 17th at 39-4 3/4, followed by David Martinez in 21st at 36-7 1/4, Murray in 24th at 35-3 1/2 and Araya Finley in 29th at 29-8 1/2.

This afternoon the Wolves will be headed to State for the meet that will take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Kelly Walsh High School in Casper.
