Senior Mother's Day tea well attended

Over the years, the Mother's Day Tea at the Golden Hour Senior Center has grown.

This year, about 130 attendees joined in celebrating Mother's Day at the center by having tea and eating numerous desserts and finger sandwiches.

One group of ladies were sitting at the table decorated with pink tablecloths and pink rose centerpieces and discussing how the Mother's Day Tea started.

While snacking on thumbprint cookies, scones and lemon bars, GHSC patron Ann Lowe said she could remember the very first Mother's Day tea event ever hosted at the senior center. Even though she can't remember the exact year or date, she recalled about 12 women gathered for the first senior center tea.

Lori Venditti, former GHSC activities director, was the person who lined up the first event.

Carmen Tune said she recalled how the first tea took place outside and was in front of the center.

"Look how it's grown," Tune said looking at dining room tables filled with guests.

Lowe said the following year, the event had grown slightly from about 12 participants to around 30 or 40. The event was moved inside and tables were placed along the front of the stage. It was at this Mother's Day Tea that participants were asked to bring a special tea pot if they had one.

Lowe said it was something seeing all of those various tea pots displayed on the stage. There were so many colors and tea-pot variations.

The event continued to grow from there to what it is today. Now, almost all of the tables are used and the GHSC asked students from Expedition Academy to help serve the tea, desserts and sandwiches. For the past two years, participants have been asked to participate in a quiz and then put their name into a glass jar to see who will win a prize. This year, four prizes were donated.
