Boys soccer rebounds after two shutouts

The week wasn’t kind to the Green River High School boys soccer team.

Following a game postponement in Evanston April 26, the boys went back the following Monday and were shutout in a 4-0 loss to the Red Devils. The Wolves’ trip to Natrona County started just as badly, with their first game at Kelly Walsh ending an another 4-0 shutout.

The boys found their groove the following day against Natrona however, earning a much needed 5-1 victory.

According to head boys soccer coach Chris Bieber, the boys were pumped up and ready to play Friday. After the cancellation, which Bieber said was due to the Evanston field not having lights, the boys left Evanston and returned a few days later. During that game, Bieber said the team had a number of mental breakdowns the Red Devils were able to capitalize on. With Kelly Walsh, the Wolves had similar troubles which the Trojans capitalized on and secured their win.

However, with their game against Natrona, the boys returned to their winning ways.

“That win gave us some positive reinforcement,” Bieber said.

While allowing one goal, the Wolves scored five of their own, the most the team has scored during the regular season since their 5-4 win over Kelly Walsh April 12. Scoring for the Wolves were Haden Counts, Oran Watts, Andrew Santhuff and Nick Findlow, who scored twice.

With the soccer season almost over, the boys have Regionals in Casper this week. Their first opponent will be their rivals from Rock Springs High School Thursday at 2 p.m. While the Wolves won their first match against the Tigers, their second meeting ended in a 1-1 draw in Rock Springs. While he expects the Wolves third game against the Tigers to be a battle, Bieber is confident in what his team can do.

“We can beat every team if we show up,” Bieber said.
