Thrift store gives donations to many organizations

Thanks to a local group, many organizations received monetary donations.

The St. John’s Episcopal Thrift Shop committee recently met to determine which organizations would receive money the shop raised by selling clothing and other items.

Thrift shop member Angie Bennett said the committee meets monthly, but once a year they discuss where they would like they would like to donate their funds. Bennett said some of them are the same every year, while some news ones are added or taken off of the list. It’s all a matter of what each group needs.

Bennett said the group was excited to have the opportunity to donate $7,050 to numerous organizations this year.

Those donations will go to the United Service Organizations for the purchase of phone cards used by military personnel, Union Congregational Church’s Create a Christmas program, St. Stephen’s Mission, YWCA safe house, Hospice of Sweetwater County, Sweetwater County Library Foundation, Our Father’s House, Travelers Assistance, VIRS Respite Care, Green River Fire Department, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Sweetwater County, Green River Food Bank and the Scottish Rite Language Center. Bennett said this wouldn’t be possible without the donations from the community, however, they would like to remind the community to only donate items while the shop is open.

Bennett said it actually costs the shop money to haul things away that they can’t sell, including mattresses and couches.
