Boys win Saturday, struggle with Braves

It was a week of ups and downs for the Green River High School boys soccer team. Following a loss against Star Valley Thursday, the boys earned a win in their second meeting with Jackson at Wolves Stadium Saturday.

The boys took on Star Valley a second time Tuesday, again coming up short in a losing 3-1 effort against the Braves.

During the boys’ first game in Star Valley, head soccer coach Chris Bieber said the team gave up two early goals in the first half, coming from a penalty kick and a direct kick. Being put in a rough position early on, the team struggled as the Braves scored twice more in the second half while, the Wolves only made one shot on their opponents’ goal in that same timeframe. The game ended with a Wolves loss, 4-0.

Taking on the Jackson Broncs Saturday, the Wolves sought some payback for a loss they received the last time the two teams met. The Wolves kept pressure on the Broncs throughout the first half and scored a goal by Brent Harper with 18:58 remaining in the period.

As the weather shifted from sunny and calm to cloudy and breezy, the Wolves defense held strong against an invigorated Jackson squad. The boys defeated the Broncs 1-0 for their senior recognition game.

“It’s good for the seniors to have that win,” Bieber said.

The coach summed the Wolves’ victory up to the players playing fundamental soccer, with Bieber saying the team passed the ball well and took more shots on the Jackson goal.

Speaking prior to their second match Tuesday, Bieber was hopeful the Star Valley squad would take on a vastly different team in Green River.

While the second Star Valley game was the Wolves’ last home game, they will play one more time in Sweetwater County when they travel to Rock Springs Thursday. The Wolves were successful in their last meeting with the Tigers, winning 2-1 at home.

The boys will play at Tiger Stadium at 4:30 p.m.

They will then travel to Evanston for competition at 5 p.m.
