Wrestlers take 2nd place in Evanston

The Green River High School wrestling team started the season strong with a second-place finish in Evanston over the weekend.

The Wolves scored 202.5 points during the tournament, coming up short against Spring Creek High School from Nevada and its tournament-winning 215 points. The third-place Bear River, Utah, team scored 171 points. The tournament also saw a few Wolves crowned as champions of their divisions. Dominic Martinez finished first at 113, Kade Florez took first at 120 and Kaden Lloyd took first at 182.

The team will travel to Grand Junction, Colo., this weekend for another tournament.

Individual results

Clayson Mele placed second in the varsity 106 division, defeating wrestlers from Spring Creek, Bear River and Lyman by falls before losing by decision to a Spring Creek wrestler in the finals. Trevor Scicluna, also competing in the division, placed fifth, being defeated by Spring Creek by fall in the quarter finals, but making his way through the consolation rounds and winning the match for fifth place by fall against a Rawlins wrestler.

At the varsity 113 division, Dominic Martinez took first, receiving a bye in the quarter finals and defeating wrestlers from Pinedale and Evanston. Nathan Campos took fourth in the division, losing in the quarter finals against Pinedale via major decision. Campos then received a bye in the first consolation round and defeated a wrestler from Evanston via decision, before losing to Pinedale in the third-place match by decision.

In the varsity 120 division, Kade Flores took first, defeated wresters from Big Piney, Bear River and Evanston by fall.

Kade Knezovich’s place is unknown in the varsity 126 division. He received a bye in the first round of the championship, but lost in the quarter finals to a wrestler from Spring Creek. He won by major decision against a wrestler from Spring Creek in the second round of the consolation bracket, but was defeated by an Evanston wrestler in the third round.

In the varsity 132 division, Bronson LaFountaine’s place is unknown. He lost to a wrestler from Rock Springs in the first round of the championship bracket. He received a bye in the first consolation round, but was defeated in the second round by a wrester from Spring Creek.

Jacob Weipert placed third in the varsity 138 division, winning against wrestlers from Mountain View, Rawlins and Spring Creek. He was defeated by a wrestler from Rock Springs in the semifinals. Weipert then defeated wrestlers from Rock Springs and Rawlins to secure his place. Jacob Schlappi’s place is unknown in the division, he received a bye in the first championship round, but was defeated by a wrestler from Rock Springs in the second round and lost to a wrestler from Weber, Utah, in the second consolation round.

At varsity 145, Justin Flores placed sixth. Flores defeated wrestlers from Evanston and Spring Creek in the first two championship rounds, but was defeated by a wrestler from Kemmerer in the quarterfinals. Flores then defeated wrestlers from Rawlins and Mountain View in the consolation bracket before being defeated in the semifinals by a wrestler from Rock Springs. Flores then lost the fifth place match against a wrestler from Lyman.

Tanner Adam placed third in the varsity 152 division. Adam received a first-round bye and defeated a wrestler from Grantsville, Utah, before losing the semifinal match against a wrestler from Weber, Utah. Adam then defeated Garrett Harris of Green River and a wrestler from Spring Creek to earn his third-place spot.

Harris finished fifth in the division, winning his first round match against a wrestler from Big Piney, but lost in the quarterfinals against Bear River. Harris defeated wrestlers from Big Piney and Kemmerer before losing to Adam and winning the fifth-place match against a wrestler Rawlins.

At varsity 160, both Tayler Jensen and Anthony Wood’s places are unknown. Jensen won the first championship round against a wrestler from Evanston, but lost against Spring Creek in the quarterfinals. Jensen then lost his second-round consolation bracket match against a wrestler from Lyman. Wood received a bye in the first championship round, but was defeated in the quarterfinals by a wrestler from Weber, Utah. Wood received a bye int he second consolation round, but was defeated in the third round by a wrestler from Big Piney.

Jon Ty Leininger placed fifth in the varsity 170 division. He defeated a wrestler from Bear River in the first championship round by was defeated by a wrestler from Rawlins in the quarterfinals. Leininger then won matches against wrestlers from Rock Springs and Evanston before being defeated in the consolation semifinals by a wrestler from Spring Creek. He then defeated a wrestler from Bear River to take fifth.

Kaden Lloyd won the varsity 182 division, defeating wrestlers from Grantsville, Utah; Big Piney; Mountain View and Weber, Utah, to earn the championship.

Payton Tucker finished second in the varsity 195 division, receiving a bye in the first round and defeating wrestlers from Rawlins and Spring Creek to make it to the finals. Tucker was then defeated by a wrestler from Kemmerer in that final match.

in varsity 220, Sage Wilde took fourth. He received a bye in the first championship round and defeated a wrestler from Weber, Utah, in the quarterfinals before being defeated by a Bear River wrestler in the semifinals. Wilde then won the consolation semifinals against a Weber, Utah, wrestler, but lost the third-place match to a wrestler from Spring Creek.
