Wolves win final home game

In their last game in front of a home crowd, the Wolves earned a victory that would end their five-game losing streak.

The Wolves took on the Powell Panthers, defeating them 28-6 in a game that would feature strong play from the Wolves on both the offense and defense. Powell received the first kickoff off the game, but came up short in their possession. The Wolves would see similar results in their first possession and the two teams battled each other throughout a scoreless first quarter.

The Wolves would be the first to strike, scoring their first touchdown courtesy of a run by James King with 8:38 remaining in the half. With the following extra point, Green River would develop a lead they would keep throughout the night. During the following Powell possession, a fumble and recovery by Johnson gave the Wolves excellent field position on their next scoring drive. The Wolves were quick in capitalizing on their good fortune, ending a short drive with a pass from quarterback Dallan Serrano to Anthony Johnson for their second touchdown, extending Green River’s lead to 14-0.

Fumbles and interceptions would plague the second quarter, as the Panthers would lose the ball a second time to a fumble, while the Powell’s defense intercepted a pass from Serrano. However, Powell would remain scoreless and the Wolves were unable to extend their lead by the end of the half.

The second half started with the Wolves receiving the ball. Their first possession ended in a punt to Powell. The Green River defense was unyielding and forced the Panthers to punt again, with the following return setting the Wolves up on their own 43-yard line. Plays featuring Kyle Ivie and Anthony Mitchell set Serrano up for a 1-yard quarterback sneak into the endzone, his ninth touchdown of the season. Erik Gwaltney’s kick extended Green River’s lead to 21-0. The Wolves defense remained firm, swatting off Powell’s attempts to score throughout the rest of the third quarter. A back-and-fourth affair continued into the fourth quarter by the two teams until a critical blown snap forced Powell to take over on downs at the Wolves’ 38-yard line. The Wolves used the opportunity to seal the Panthers’ fate after a catch by Seth White resulted in the Wolves’ fourth touchdown of the night. Following Gwaltney’s kick, the Wolves would have an 28-0 lead over the Panthers. It would not be a shutout at Wolves Stadium however, as the Panthers would finally find the endzone with less than a minute left in the game.

With their win, the Wolves achieve their first conference victory, improving their record 1-3. Overall, the team is 2-5.

The Wolves will travel to Cody for their last game of the regular season Friday, where a loss will mean the end of the Wolves’ season. The Cody Broncs will seek to end their season on a high note after a 20-16 loss to Star Valley Friday night.

The Broncs have a better record than the Wolves, with a 2-2 record in conference and 5-2 overall. The team also has not lost a home game this season. Kickoff starts at 6 p.m.
