Like everything else in Washington, D.C., the selection and eventual confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court has been a partisan debacle in which the worst parts of American politics reared their ugly heads from the Congressional swamp.
We don’t think Kavanaugh is fit to serve on the court, and we’re not referring to the allegations Dr. Christine Blasely Ford made against him. Even without those allegations, we think Kavanaugh has said enough to prove he should not be a Supreme Court justice. We’re disappointed in both Senators Mike Enzi and John Barrasso for voting in favor of Kavanaugh’s Senate confirmation.
The heart of the matter is Kavanaugh made easily-disproven claims while under oath at the Senate confirmation hearings. As a judge, Kavanaugh should have honored the oath to speak the truth and should have been disqualified for not doing so. We believe there are other conservative judges who are more than qualified to become a member of the United States’ highest court and wouldn’t have the need to lie when responding to questions posed by senators. There was ample time to select another nominee and we’re confused as to why Kavanaugh seemingly was rushed through the procedure.
One of the most blatant lies involved Kavanaugh’s upbringing, where he told senators he “grew up in a city plagued by gun violence and gang violence and drug violence.” While Kavanaugh is from the Washington, D.C., area, he was raised in nearby Bethesda, Md., a city with a 2016 median household income of $146,664, according to http://www.census.gov. Bethesda is a predominantly white community, with the census website reporting 82.1 percent of residents identifying as white. The next highest nationality listed is Asian, which amounts to 10.3 percent of the population. Bethesda is not a community gripped by gang violence or drugs the way other areas around Washington, D.C., is.
Kavanaugh is a graduate of the Georgetown Preparatory School in North Bethesda, a location that is about as far removed from any sort of gang or drug violence as one could imagine. Why Kavanaugh claimed to have grown up in a community consumed by criminal violence is beyond us. Why he told similar mistruths about himself during testimony is equally baffling.
However, what we can say it that it’s disappointing that someone can so blatantly make up whatever he chooses while under oath and be rewarded for it.
