Volleyball team sweeps Jackson at home

The Lady Wolves volleyball team won one against Jackson and lost one to Evanston last week.

The Green River High School Lady Wolves volleyball team fought hard Thursday while on the road, but they still lost to Evanston in five sets, 25-18, 25-17, 23-25, 27-29, 15-11.

"The last three games we played good volleyball," head coach Rikki Shantz said. "We played good defense."

However, the team still needs to work on its passing, serving and consistency, she said.

"We seem to rely on the big hits and blocks to win the game for us, when it's really the basics that win us games," Shantz said. "We hope to play more consistently good volleyball."

On Saturday, the Lady Wolves had the home-court advantage and it paid off when they beat Jackson in three sets, 25-12, 25-9, 25-14.

"Saturday home games are usually pretty low key. We were prepared to bring our own energy," Shantz said. "This one was different. We had a student section and quite a few non-parents in the stand. That was awesome."

The team loved the support from the home crowd and used it to keep their energy up against Jackson through most of the game, she said.

"Energy was good throughout the match, even with the lopsided scores," she said.

As for improvements, "We are still missing far too many serves," Shantz said.

This week the Lady Wolves will play Lyman High School in Green River at Friday at 7 p.m., while on Saturday they will travel to Star Valley High School with the game starting at 2 p.m.

To prepare for these games, Shantz said the team is going to continue working on the basics and maintaining their discipline.

One area coach Shantz is watching is the fatigue the girls have been showing.

"We are low on numbers this year so girls are getting a lot of reps in practice and playing two levels on game days," Shantz said. " I think they have shown fatigue, but as a coaching staff I think we are doing our best to manage that."
