While Sweetwater County voters sided with Foster Friess in the Republican Primary Election, GOP voters across the state decided State Treasurer Mark Gordon would be their choice for Governor of Wyoming.
Gordon will take on Democrat Mary Throne in the General Election. Throne defeated Kenneth Casner, Michael Allen Green and Rex Wilde for the Democratic nomination.
Friess earned 1,692 votes in Sweetwater County, Gordon earned 1,217 votes, with Sam Galeotos receiving 1,028 votes, Harriet Hageman earning 807 votes, Dr. Taylor Haynes receiving 265 votes and Bill Dahlin earning 60 votes.
Statewide however, Gordon lead with 31,247 votes, while Friess earned 24,499, Hageman received 20,092, Galeotos received 11,371, Dr. Haynes earned 5,443 and Dahlin received 1,530.
In a press release sent after the votes were tabulated statewide, Gordon said he and his wife are “incredibly humbled” by the election’s results.
“From the very beginning, our campaign has been driven by, and for, Wyoming people,” Gordon said. “Tonight, Wyoming people spoke loud and clear.”
Gordon said he’s taking nothing for granted and will continue meeting and speaking with Wyoming residents as he continues to campaign.
Kristi Racines defeated Nathan Winters in her bid for the Wyoming State Auditor. In Sweetwater County, she received 2,518 votes to Winters’ 1,784. She will face Democrat Jeff Dockter in November.
For State Treasurer, Curt Meier won the GOP nomination and will be uncontested in November. Sweetwater County voters supported his opponent Leland Christensen, giving him 2,408 votes to Meier’s 1,683 and Ron Redo’s 308 votes.
However, Meier earned a total 41,206 across the state, while Christensen received 37,795 and Redo received 3,827.
U.S. Senator John Barrasso and U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney won their respective primary races. In Sweetwater County, Barrasso lead his competitors with 3,190 votes. Dave Dodson received 1,396 votes, John Holtz received 160 votes, Charlie Hardy received 133 votes, Roque “Rocky” De La Fuente received 84 votes and Anthony L. Van Risseghem received 54 votes. In Cheney’s race, county Republicans gave her 2,982 votes. Opponents Rod Miller and Blake S. Stanley received 865 and 1,051 votes respectively.
In Barrasso’s victory statement, he said Wyoming residents can see positive results from his work in Washington, D.C.
“The last two years I have worked to force real change in the federal government,” he said. “Taxes are now lower, regulations that unfairly targeted our state are being reversed and we have remade our highest courts.”
Barrasso will face Democrat Gary Trauner in the General Election.
Cheney thanked her opponents for stepping forward and participating in the election process on behalf of Wyoming’s residents.
“I also want to congratulate our strong slate of Republican candidates on their nominations,” she said. “I look forward to campaigning with them in the general election as we fight to continue to build upon the progress that is being made to cut taxes and regulation, expand Wyoming’s energy, mining and ag industries and restore America’s strength and power around the world.”
