Rock painting enjoyed

"Rock painting?"

"Why are we going to paint rocks?"

These were just a couple of questions seniors at the Golden Hour Senior Center had before they found out just how fun rock painting can be.

Activities and marketing coordinator Irish Kreis is always looking for new and fun things for the seniors to do. She said the rock painting idea was stolen from 307 Rocks, which is a local group that paints rocks, hides them and encourages others to find them, take a photo of them and post it to their Facebook page.

Kreis said those who were painting the rocks at the GHSC weren't going to hide them outside because she didn't bring any setting spray to protect the rocks once painted. However, she told the seniors they hide them throughout the building if they wanted other seniors to find them. Most seniors wanted to keep the rocks they painted.

"We don't know what we're doing, but we're having fun," Gloria Gulp said.

She was busy painting two rocks -- one she painted to look like Casper the Friendly Ghost and the other was a bumble bee.

Gulp said even though she was familiar with painted rocks since she found one left by her car door one time, she never painted one herself.

Gulp wasn't the only one who was new to the rock painting activity.

"This is my first time and I am enjoying it," Kathleen Parker said. "I will take my patience and do it."

For Gail Robinson, she was just trying to make her rock look pretty, but admitted her first rock didn't quite meet her expectations.

"I'm doing another one because I know how to do it now," Robinson said.

The painting rocks activity was even attended by visitors.

Debbie Tucker of St. Louis said she was visiting town and decided to see what rock painting was all about. She decided to paint an owl like the one she had scene on the rock painting displays.

"This is something I wanted to try," Tucker said.
