New sign to welcome GR visitors

Out with the old and in with the new.

This old adage holds true for many situations and so does it in this case. The city of Green River has torn down the old concrete “Welcome to Green River “sign and is going to replace it with a new metal and rock work sign.

Brad Raney, Green River Parks and Recreation director, said he’s not sure how long the old concrete sign had been located at the entrance to Green River. The sign had holes in it because it had to be moved one time and its estimated that the sign was 25 years old and was moved around the city a few times.

Even though paint was placed on the holes to cover them up, if one looked closely one would have noticed the paint was slightly a different color.

“It was really hard concrete and it took us a while to get it out of there,” Raney said.

This project was a vision of the Green River Beautification Committee, which was working closely with Sweetwater County Travel and Tourism.

Raney said travel and tourism wrote a grant for the project and received it. The total cost of the sign is $16,409. Even though the city obtained a $5,000 grant, it will still need to pay for what the grant won’t cover.

Raney said so far the city has received about $2,200 in private contributions to help pay for the sign.

“The total price may go down for the project as we should be able to reuse the existing concrete base on which the old sign was placed,” he said.

The new sign will look similar to the Green River Chamber of Commerce sign, which is also located in the gateway to Green River.

However this sign is not a scrolling sign and will say “Welcome to Green River Wyoming.”

The city’s new logo will also be etched into the metal sign.

The idea of beautifying the main entrance to Green River isn’t something new. Raney said it’s been one of the cities plans for a while now.

The city tore down the old sign last week and is waiting for the contractor to put in the new sign, which should be done by June 29.
