Girls prepare for tournament

Last Tuesday, the Lady Wolves soccer team pulled off its first non-conference win against the Evanston Lady Red Devils.

"The losing streak's over," head coach Tracy Wyant said she heard her Lady Wolves saying after the game.

With the 3-2 win, the Lady Wolves now are 1-1 in conference play.

"It felt good to get one under the belt," Wyant said. "It builds confidence and takes off the pressure."

Wyant said the win was good, but Evanston hasn't been known to be a strong soccer team. However, she predicts this will change since the team now has a seeder program, which she described as when a town or city has youth soccer clubs available for youth through middle school.

She said cities and towns with these types of programs, such as Cheyenne schools dominate soccer in high school.

"The club teams make a big difference," Wyant said. "We also don't have middle-school soccer here."

Wyant said she expects Evanston to be a tough team to beat within the next couple of years. She said they are already getting better.

As for the Lady Wolves, they need to work on getting closer to the goal to score points.

She said the Lady Red Devils wouldn't let them get through to the goal because they were packing the box.

"There's a lot of room for improvement," Wyant said. "It's the beginning of the season still."

However, Wyant knows she has a lot of talented players on the team and they need to just keep working to figure out what lineup is going to work the best for them and which players will work well together.

"I think we are the better team," she said.

Another area the team needs to work on is getting rid of the ball.

Wyant said when the Lady Wolves are under pressure, they don't get rid of the ball as quickly as they should.

"Everything that happened is fixable," she said.

With spring break taking place, the Lady Wolves took off Friday and the weekend, but they were right back to practicing on Monday. Wyant said they have to because they are attending the Worland Tournament this weekend. All of these games are non-conference games and the Lady Wolves will play Douglas first.

After that, who the Lady Wolves will play all depends on who wins and loses their games. Some of the teams attending besides Douglas and Green River include Pinedale, Rock Springs, Worland and Evanston.

The lead scorer for the Lady Wolves in the Evanston game was Carly Kettering with two goals, and Kaylee Hymas with one goal with an assist from Zoe Turner.
