High school's indoor track season ends in Gillette

Traveling to Gillette with 18 other teams from throughout the state, 22 members of the Green River High School indoor track teams took part in the final indoor track meet of the season, the State Indoor Track Championships.

In the team standings, the girls finished in a tie for 14th place, while the boys finished in 13th. Many of the Wolves improved their times and distances in the final indoor meet of the year, both as individual competitors and as members of the relay teams.

Among the top performances at the meet for the Wolves were those finishing in the top half of the competitors in their event including the top dozen spots including McKenzie Davison, who took eighth in the 400 meters and ninth in the 800 meters.

Natasha Young finished ninth in the shot put, while Lauren Hoyt took 11th in the long jump. The girls 1,600-meter medley relay team of Jimena Campos, Hoyt, Davison and Carly Kettering finished in fifth place, improving their season best by 13 seconds.

She was able to shave 29 seconds from her personal best. Hoyt was the top sprinter for the lady Wolves in addition to being the their top long jumper.

For the boys, finishing in the top 10 were Kyle Cacho, going over 21 feet in the long jump for the first time and placing ninth and Nick Boldt, who finished eighth in the shot put at 46 feet. Finishing in the top half of the competition in the relays was the boys 4X800-meter relay team, who took sixth place, while improving its time by 30 seconds.

The team is comprised of Alex Davis, Christian Gaytan, Brayden Kovick and Marcos Valerio.

The outstanding improvement on the days for the boys was registered by Davis, who improved his 800-meter run time by 21 seconds, while teammates Gaytan and Valerio finished in the top 20 and had excellent sub-2:10 times of 2:07.03 and 2:08:75 respectively.

Cole White was the top sprinter for the boys, leading the way in the 55-meter, the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes.

Head track coach Dan Hansen thought the season went well. Hanson said the athletes pushed hard in practice, which directly resulted in a number of school records being broken and personal records being set throughout the season.

“With the way we finished at the indoor track and field meet, we will use that as a springboard into the outdoor season,” Hansen said.
