GRHS swimmers receive conference, state honors

Four Lady Wolves swimmers received All-State honors, while eight received All-Conference honors.

The Green River High School swimming team came home from state with a fifth-place finish out of 12 teams competing.

“Our goal this year was to be third place. We came up a little short of that goal, but we accomplished so much more,” head coach Colleen Seiloff said.” I am very proud of their accomplishments and I know that they are going to continue to get even better.”

“We were in the mix of things throughout the state meet and it was fun,” she said. “(I) can’t wait to get back there next year. We told the girls ‘go out and celebrate your hard work’ and they did.”

All-State awards are based on how a person places at state. The Wyoming High School Activities Association gives All-State honors to the top individual in each event and the top team in each relay.

Avery Otto was the only swimmer to receive an All-State honor from the WHSAA. She took first place in the 100-yard butterfly.

The Wyoming Swimming and Diving Coaches Association gives All-State honors for the top three finishers in relays and top three in individual events.

Otto also received All-State from the WSDCA in two categories. She took third place in the 50-yard free and third in the 200-yard medley relay.

Lauren Jensen received All-State from the WSDCA in two categories. She took third place in the 100-yard backstroke and third in the 200-yard medley relay.

Ashley Jensen and Jesse Lauze received All-State honors from the WSDCA in the 200-yard medley relay, where they took third place.

For seniors Otto and Lauze, it was a bittersweet end to the season.

“It is going to be hard to lose our senior girls. They have brought a lot of talent and leadership to our team. Not sure they can be replaced,” Seiloff said. “I look forward to seeing what they go on to do.”

Seiloff said Otto will be signing a letter of intent to swim for the University of Wyoming on Thursday, while Lauze plans on focusing her energy on going to college to be a doctor.

“The Jensen girls will continue to bring great leadership to our team,” Seiloff said. “They work hard, are great leaders (and have an) awesome work ethic. They lead by example.”

Seiloff said the Jensen girls have never miss practice or come in late.

“They are going to help us continue moving this team forward,” she said. “I know the team is looking forward to what they can do next year.”

As for the whole team, Seiloff couldn’t have asked for a more dedicated group. During the season, they work out two times a day. These workouts include swimming, weight lifting and dry land workouts. It adds up to about four hours a day.

Most of the Lady Wolves work out on the off season by swimming on the USA Swimming Team.

“Our high school program is improving because our club program and our school programs are working together to help our athletes be more competitive within  the state and it is starting to work,” Seiloff said. “So proud of what these girls do inside and outside of the season.”
