The Green River High School swimming team didn’t hit their goal of taking one of the top three spots at state, but the coach is still happy with the season.
“They swam really well, but we didn’t quite come out with our team goal,” head coach Colleen Seiloff said.
The Lady Wolves came out of state with a fifth-place finish and although it wasn’t what they wanted to accomplish, Seiloff knew the Lady Wolves gave it their all.
“I was pleased across the board,” she said.
Seiloff said she had some young swimmers in events that didn’t have any other freshman competing in the top 12. This shows just how much talent the younger swimmers on the team brought this year.
“I think this year was a good experience year for them,” she said.
Competing at state is just completely different than any other meet. Seiloff said even for swimmers who were competitive in USA Swim state is different.
It just has its own feel. Any experience one can get at state will help them in the future.
For example, last year, Sydni Sanders attended the event as a freshman and this year as a sophomore she was more comfortable swimming at state.
Seiloff said once a swimmer gets that first year of state out of the way, each year after that they seem to improve. Seiloff said she’s also hoping upcoming swimmers from middle school and USA Swim will only add to the teams’ strengths.
One area Seiloff would like some interest in is diving. Diving is just something that not a lot of swimmers want to do, but to gain team points it’s important to have a diver to compete.
This year, Green River didn’t have a diver and that cost them points at state. To be a diver a person must have the proper mindset for it, she explained. She’s hoping someone with that mindset will come along soon.
Seiloff took a moment to reflect on this year’s season and she felt overall the Lady Wolves did well.
“I’m really proud of all the girls,” Seiloff said. “Not just the girls that made it to state. They had a successful season. We’ll miss those seniors.”
