GRHS Swimmers do well at weekend duals

This weekend the Green River High School Lady Wolves swimming team hosted two duals.

Head coach Colleen Seiloff said on Friday the team swam against Jackson, Cheyenne East and Cheyenne Central. The Lady Wolves won their duals against Jackson and Cheyenne East, but lost their dual against Cheyenne Central.

On Saturday, the team competed against Jackson and Laramie. They won their dual against Jackson, but lost to Laramie.

Duals are set up differently that regular meets, Seiloff said. All of the swimmers from each team swim at the same time for each event and the computer then determines which team won.

“We don’t do duals very often anymore,” Seiloff said. “It’s kind of fun actually. It’s a lot more strategy in it.”

She said she believes the reason most teams haven’t hosted duals as often as they used to is because they all got into hosting big invitationals.

A dual limits how many teams can compete, which is based on how many lanes a pool has. This allows for only four or maybe five teams to compete.

“You’re pushing it when you have five teams. It’s harder for scoring,” Seiloff said.

During an invitational, there can be as many as 12 teams competing. This gives all of the teams the same advantage of being able to see the competition.

“We just swim to qualify,” Seiloff said. “We swim to win.”

Seiloff said throughout the season she picks which event the swimmers are going to swim in, but other times she allows them to pick. The team was supposed to take this weekend off, but since they decided not to go to Evanston earlier this year, Seiloff decided they would attend the Rock Springs meet this weekend, which takes place at 9 a.m. in Rock Springs.

To prepare for this weekend’s meet, the team wants to keep cutting its times. Once again, there are a few swimmers very close to qualifying for state.

The Lady Wolves are looking forward to regionals and state, but know if they look too far ahead they can miss something in front of them.

“We keep doing what we need to do now, and the rest will take care of itself,” Seiloff said.

Each week, the Lady Wolves continue to improve.
