Lady Wolves win and lose on the road

The Lady Wolves High School volleyball team traveled to take on two tough teams and came back with one win.

On Thursday, the Lady Wolves took on power house Kelly Walsh and lost in three sets, 14-25, 12-25, 14-25.

“We didn’t play normal Green River volleyball,” head coach Rikki Shantz said. “Their tough serves kinda took us out of our game. They are a very good team.”

Shantz said during the game against Kelly Walsh, the Lady Woves adjusted to the team and played pretty good defense.

“I did not see them give up at all. They definitely fought till the end,” Shantz said.

The Lady Wolves need to work on knowing and believing they have what it takes to take on a tough team like that.

They have the skills needed to be competitive against Kelly Walsh, she said.

“We understood that right now they are the better team,” Shantz said. “We will continue to work hard to get to that level.”

After the Kelly Walsh game, the Lady Wolves needed to regroup for the next day’s game against Natrona County.

“We talked about about our mentality,” Shantz said. “Having a desire to win.”

Even though the team was on the road, Shantz didn’t let them sleep in. They all got up at 8 a.m., broke into three groups and completed various community-service projects.

“I wanted it to be as much of a normal day as possible,” she said. “I didn’t want them laying around all day, sleeping. That seemed to work out well.”

The plan worked because the Lady Wolves came out on top in three sets, 25-12, 25-23, 25-19.

During the Natrona County game, the Lady Wolves passed and hit the ball really well. They also played great defense.

“It was an all around good game for us,” Shantz said.

With any game, there are always areas that must be improved on. Shantz said they will continue to work on defense, taking care of the ball and not giving the other team points the other team didn’t earn.

“With four days of practice, this week we will have a lot of time to work on some of things we saw this weekend that we want to work on,” Shantz said.

This weekend, the Lady Wolves will travel to compete at the Casper Invite. During tournament play, only the best two out of three games count. The team will play multiple matches in one day.

“We get to play a ton of competitive volleyball,” Shantz said. “It’s good for us.”
