Seniors sing songs together

The sound of music and voices could be heard coming from the dining room.

A quick glance in showed seniors at the Golden Hour Senior Center singing songs.

Barbara Bates, GHSC activities and marketing coordinator, said the one-time event was well attended.

"We were just trying to do something different," Bates said. "People were clapping and having a good time."

Bates said the center invited singers Terri Thomas and Howard Hart, who lead sing a longs at Mission at Castle Rock Rehabilitation Center, to the senior center to lead the group.

"I think it went well," Bates said. "It was well received."

A lot of the songs sang were old-time songs many learned in school including, "She'll be Coming Round the Mountain" and "Don't sit Under the Apple Tree." They also sang a lot of patriotic songs, she said.

It was nice to see how the songs jogged some of the patron's memories. This in turn allowed for them to share their memories and stories with others.

The event went so well Bates said she thinks the center may host another event like this again. She said they may even have Hart and Thomas lead it again.

For Bates, the best part of the entire hour-long event was seeing how the patrons responded to it. They were smiling and genuinely having a good time.
