Knights end week with wins

The Green River Knights went 1-4 during play in Billings, Mont., over the weekend.

In a second outing against the Billings, Mont., Halos Thursday evening, the Knights were handed a 5-1 loss by the Halos. While the Halos were able to beat the Knights 15-3 in their first meeting July 2, the Knights held the Billings, Mont., team to only five runs. The Halos took the lead at the bottom of the third inning, scoring the first run of the game. A scoreless fourth inning led to the Knights making their only score of the game, courtesy of Tommy Kelly, tying the game 1-1 at the top of the fifth inning. The Halos struck back at the bottom of the fifth, earning three runs, followed by a fourth in the sixth. A scoreless seventh inning for the Knights sealed their defeat. The Knights finished the game with no recorded errors and hits from Kelly, Joseph Schultz and Brendan Hopkins.

Their second game resulted in a close 5-4 loss to Riverton Friday evening. Riverton posted an early run in the bottom of the first inning, to which the Knights responded to with two of their own at the top of the second, giving them a 2-1 lead. Riverton then posed three more runs by the end of the second inning, followed by a fourth during the third inning. The Knights were able to make single run scores in the fourth and fifth inning, but it was too little to overcome Riverton’s lead. A scoreless sixth inning for the Knights ended the game. Hopkins and Karson Beutel had two hits during the game. Beutel’s hits resulted in runs for the team. Blake Gelinas and Ian Ebert also scored for the Knights.

The Knights took on another Wyoming team Saturday at noon, facing Lovell. A two-inning scoreless streak ended when the Knights posted their first score in the top of the third inning, which ended with Lovell posting two runs and taking the lead with 2-1. The Knights responded with three unanswered runs, two in the fourth inning and a third in the fifth. Despite taking the lead during the fourth inning, the Knights would not be able keep it. The Lovell team exploded in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring five runs to take back the lead 7-4. A scoreless seventh inning for the Knights ended the game. The Knights out hit Lovell 11 to 4, but was unable to turn them into runs. Kelly, Ebert, Andrew Munoz and Ramsay Taliaferro scored for the team.

A second Saturday game ended in defeat for the Knights as well, losing 10-3 to a team from Bozeman, Mont. Despite taking a one-run lead in the first inning, the Knights quickly fell behind by the end of third, trailing 3-2. Another run in the top of the fourth tied the game up, but the Bozeman, Mont., team responded with four more runs by the end of the inning. Green River was unable to score while Bozeman posted two more runs in the fifth inning, and a single run in the sixth, finishing the game with a score of 10-3. Kelly, Shhultz and Beutel scored runs for the Knights.

Things looked up for the team Sunday, winning their first game of the weekend in a matchup against the 406 Fliers. The Fliers were able to take the lead at the end of the second inning with two unanswered runs. The Knights were able to tie the game with two runs in the fourth inning, followed by another two in the fifth.

The Fliers remained scoreless after the second inning, with the final two innings resulting in no runs for either team, giving the Knights a 4-2 victory.

During action against Powell Tuesday night, the Knights were able to create a three-game winning streak, defeating the Powell squad in a doubleheader.

The Knights took a 9-3 win over Powell in their first game and a 4-3 win in their second. The Knights will travel to Lovell to take the town’s baseball team Thursday evening.
