Lightning strike, fire reported west of RS

A fire set off by a lightning strike caused a power outage in the Purple Sage area west of Rock Springs Monday morning.

Sweetwater County deputy sheriffs and firefighters were advised of a power pole on fire early Monday morning, resulting in a power outage at residences and businesses in the area between Highway 191 South and Kanda.

The burning pole was located north of Interstate 80 near the intersection of Purple Sage Road and old Highway 30.

Sheriff Mike Lowell said the fire, which destroyed not only the power pole, but burned through a significant area of surrounding brush, was extinguished by Sweetwater County Fire District No. 1 firefighters. No injuries reported, and no property was damaged aside from the power pole.

Power was restored to the area shortly after.

A second fire was reported in the same area Monday, with sheriff’s deputies and county firefighters dealing with the fire.

At around 3:30 p.m., a fire began at a mobile home at 45 Purple Sage Road, No. 27. Emergency responders were notified and the lone occupant, the woman who lives at the mobile home with her husband, was able to escape.

Lowell said county deputies and firefighters from Fire District No. 1 raced to the scene.

While firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze, the residence was a total loss.

At the scene, several people were examined for smoke inhalation by ambulance service personnel, but were not transported to Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County. No other injuries were reported.
