Wolves track sends 25 to state

Three regional champions named

The Wolves Boys and Girls Track team had prequalified nine competitors prior to this weekend's regional meet in Rock Springs and came out of the meet with an additional 12 competitors, including three regional champions, that will be heading to the 2017 State Track Championships.

Senior Hunter Spartz won the shot put event, Braden Reichl won in the 800 meters and Erika Wilson won in the high jump.

Those that finish in the top eight at regionals automatically qualify for state.

For the Lady Wolves, those heading to state include junior Andri Dewey, one of the top sprinters in the state, in four events. She qualified in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters and the 4x100-meter relay. Fellow junior Lauren Hoyt will be competing in the long jump, and the 4x100-meter relay and junior Natasha Young qualified in the shot put.

Four sophomores also qualified in their specialties, including Wilson in the 100-meter hurdles and the high jump, Kaisa Arnell in the 3,200-meter run and the 4x800-meter relay, Jimena Campos in both the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles and Ashley Jensen in the 4x800-meter relay.

Three freshman will also be heading to their first state meet including Kezley Moore in the 400-meter run and the 4x800-meter relay, Mariyah Brady in the 100-meter hurdles and the 4x100-meter relay, and Sydney Hosford in the 4x800-meter relay.

Other top finishers for the Lady Wolves at regionals included Dewey, who took second in the 200-meters and third in both the 100 and 400-meter runs, Wilson who won the high jump, and Brady who took second in the 100-meter hurdles.

For the boys, junior Kyle Cacho and senior Reichl led the way for the state qualifiers as Cacho qualified in the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays the long jump and the 100 and 200-meter sprints, while Reichel qualified in the 4x800 relay and the 800, 1,600, and 3,200-meter runs. Also qualifying in multiple events were Cole White in the 100, 400 and 4x400 meter runs, Chance Hofer in the long jump, 110 and 300-meter hurdles, along with freshman Grant Huber in the 110 hurdles. Drew Wilson and Cody Childress qualified in the 4x100 and 4x400 Meter relays, Eric Clingenpeel, Zach Orr, and Miles Moffat in the 4x800-meter relay and Hunter Spartz and Nick Boldt in the shot put and Spartz in the discus.

Spartz won the regional competition in the shot put, improving his season's best to 48'9."

Reichl also finished first in the 800 meters with a season's best for him at 1:58.62, while also finishing second in the 3,200 meters and anchoring the 4x800 relay. Cacho finished second in the long jump while going over 21 feet for the second week in a row at 21'.01.25."

All in all coach Hansen was once again pleased with his team's performance with more than 20 competitors qualifying for state with a number of other members of the team performing well and gaining valuable experience.
