Track readies for upcoming regional meet

On May 2, the more experienced competitors and top qualifiers for State headed North to Casper for the Casper Classic.

Generally referred to as The Best of The Best, top qualifiers regardless of their division compete against each other, since at state they will only be competing within their conference.

Leading the way for the Lady Wolves, junior Andri Dewey finished second in the 200 meters with a season best time of 26.52. Erika Wilson was the only other Lady Wolf to place as she finished second in the high jump and seventh in the long jump.

On the boys side, senior Hunter Spartz improved in his specialty as he took eighth in the shot put at 48.04.50 and eighth in the discus. Fellow senior Braden Reichl took first in the 1,600-meter run to complete the competition for the Wolves in the Best of the Best.

Also on Tuesday, a younger group of mostly freshman and sophomores competed in the Jeff Hereford Memorial Track Meet at Mountain View.

Finishing in the top 10 for the Lady Wolves in the 100-meter hurdles were Isabella Kunz and Ashlie Childress coming in ninth and 10th respectively. Patience Bentley was the top finisher for the girls in the 100 meters, coming in 14th in 14.28. Kirsten Knezovich was the top Lady Wolf, taking fifth in the 1,600 meters. Kunz was again the top finisher in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 57.91 in sixth place, almost 3.5 seconds ahead of her teammates who finished seventh through 10th in the race. Bentley also led the way for the girls in the 200 meters, taking ninth while also being the top finisher in the long jump with a sixth-place finish at 13’11.50.”

Knezovich led the girls in the triple jump taking eighth at 29’3.”

In the field events, Cassidy Gomez led the way for the Lady Wolves, taking 11th with a throw of 27-10, just inches ahead of teammate Alaina Maiers who came in 12th place at 27’04.50 inches. Finally for the girls, Audrie Harrison finished in 12th place and Kim Peterson in 13th, leading the way in the discus with throws of 75’9” and 75’3.”

On the boys side, sophomore Tommy Clark led the way in the 100 meters tying for 16th in 12.40 seconds. In the 1,600 meters, freshman Logan Reichl tied for fifth with a time of 5:43.00. The boys 400 meters was also led by a freshman, with Keenan Wilson taking 11th in 1:01.01.

Reichel also led the wolves in the 800 meters as he took fifth in 2:36.00. In the 200 meters, Dalin Hoyt took 16th with a time of 26.31. Another freshman, Anthony Wood, was the leading long jumper for the boys as he took 12th with a leap of 16-03.00. In the triple jump, sophomore Alex Marius led the way, finishing sixth at 37-06.50.

Two freshman came in 11th and 12th respectively as Cody Price and Wood both cleared 8-06.00. In the shot put, Justin Rubalcaba finished 14th and also led the way in the discus, finishing in 10th place. Head track coach Dan Hansen was pleased with the experience gained by his young team.

On Thursday, the team got back together for the Green River Triangular with teams from Evanston, Mountain View, Lyman and the host Green River.

Andri Dewey led the way for the Lady Wolves as she took 1st in the 100 and 200-meter sprints and second in the triple jump. Erika Wilson took firsts in the long jump and equaled her season best in the high jump at 5’4.” Kezley Moore finished first in the 400 meters, while Alexis King led the way in the 800 meters taking fourth.

Kaisa Arnell took first in the 1,600-meter run with Sydney Hosford leading the way in the 3,200-meter, run taking first. Jimena Campos took another first for the Lady Wolves in the 300-meter hurdles as did teammate Mariyah Brady in the 100 hurdles. In the shot put Natasha Young took third and took second in the discus.

On the boys side, Cody Childress won the 100 meters while Russell Ferrell was the leader for the wolves in the 200 meters taking 12th. Cole White won the 400 meters with Braden Reichl being a double winner taking both the 800 and 1,600-meter runs. Chance Hofer took first in the 110 hurdles the 300-meter hurdles and won the high jump. Anthony Wood improved to 9’0’’ to take third in the pole vault

Kyle Cacho earned first place in the long jump with an outstanding leap of 21-11.50. Drew Wilson also had a good leap in the triple jump taking first at 40-11.50.

Spartz won his specialty taking the shot put and finishing second in the discus.

Coach Hansen was pleased with the performances and believes several more competitors have a chance to qualify for the state track meet during the regional meet in Rock Springs this weekend.
