Track team visits Utah

Once again the Wolves Track team headed south, this time to Orem, Utah to take on two other Wyoming teams and a huge field of 41 schools from Utah

The biggest field of the day was in the 1,600-meter run, which had 130 runners.

According to head coach Dan Hansen, the weather was not ideal but it was good to get in some late season competition with most meets cancelled or rescheduled in Wyoming.

In the girls 100-meter hurdles, the Lady Wolves took 12th, 14th and 26th in the field of 46 with freshman Mariyah Brady edging out her two sophomore teammates Erika Wilson and Jimena Campos respectively.

In the 100 meters, junior Andri Dewey finished 16th, with fellow junior Lauren Hoyt finishing 26th, followed by freshman Kezley Moore in 35th, Mariyah Brady taking 48th and freshman Dezeray Wilson finishing 68th in the field of 76 sprinters.

In the girls 1.600 meters, sophomore Kaisa Arnell was the only entrant for Green River and she finished in 41st place, running faster than half the field of 82. Dewey was also the top sprinter for the Lady Wolves in the 200 meters as she finished in eighth place, with Hoyt taking 36th.

Campos and Brady led the way in the hurdles with Campos taking 28th and Brady 45th.

Wilson also ran the 400 meters in her third running event of the day, finishing in 1:13.37.

In the field of 102 runners, freshman Kezley Moore ran the second fastest time for a freshman in the race taking 16th in the very large field followed by Kaisa Arnell and Ashley Jensen.

In the field events, junior Natasha Young had an excellent day, finishing third in the discus and winning the shot put. Sophomore Erika Wilson took third in the high jump with a jump of 5’1.”

The boys were led in the 100-meter dash by senior Cody Childress followed by juniors Cole White and Kyle Cacho. In the 110-meter hurdles, junior Chance Hofer led the way finishing seventh, with freshman Grant Huber close behind in 10th place in a field of 43 racers.

According to Hansen, some of the times and distances were adversely affected by the strong, cold winds and the very large fields which caused a lot of waiting around for the athletes to compete.

Senior Braden Reichel took ninth for the boys in the 1,600-meter run leading seven other Wolves runners in the huge field of 130 runners. Childress was the Wolves’ lone entrant in the 200 meters, taking 22nd out of 95 sprinters. In the 300-meter hurdles, Hofer was near the top taking 13th.

In the grueling 400-meter run junior Cole White came in 21st, out of 61 runners.

In the boys 800 meters, the Wolves had three runners led by senior Eric Clingenpeel at 35th followed by juniors Miles Moffatt and Christian Gayton all running under 2:16.

In the field events, senior Hunter Spartz took fifth in the discus and fourth in the shot put, while Hofer took 18th in the high jump.

Coach Hansen was once again pleased with the improvement and performance of his young squad. Tuesday, the Casper Classic took place, which is a competition between competitors with the top marks in the state regardless of what division they normally compete in.

Green River will have at least nine competitors who have qualified to compete, which serves as a great warm up before regionals and state.

Regionals will take place in Rock Springs May 12-13, while the Wyoming State Track Meet takes place in Casper May 18-20.
