Girls take 3rd at tournament

It was almost as if it was a new Green River High School Lady Wolves High School Girls Soccer Team this weekend.

During the Todd Malonek Southwest Invitational, the team picked up a couple of non conference wins and finished the tournament third. It was a nice change for the team that had been plagued with injuries earlier in the season.

“We definitely played a lot better,” head coach Tracy Wyant said. “We changed up our formation, which was definitely needed.”

The team tried new formations and strategies it had been working on all week and it paid off.

On Friday, the Lady Wolves took on Pinedale and came out on top, 4-0. After winning their first invitational game, they played Star Valley and won, 2-0.

The team was passing the ball, communicating and taking shots on the goal well, she said.

“It really benefited the coaching staff and the players,” Wyant said.

The last game the Lady Wolves played was in the semifinal round against Cody, which is the 3A No. 1 seed. They lost in a shoot out, 4-2.

“We lost in a shoot out,” Wyant said. “That’s a horrible way to lose.”

“We just had one critical mistake on one game,” Wyant said.

This was the third game in two days and Wyant said her girls were starting to show some fatigue during the second half of the Cody game. Despite the fatigue, Wyant was happy with how her team was playing.

“The girls played much better soccer,” Wyant said. “I’m impressed with how they played.”

After the Cody game, the Lady Wolves were set to play Worland to decide who took third and fourth place at the tournament. However, due to the winter weather conditions, Worland decided to travel home before the roads got too bad. The Lady Wolves received the third-place trophy by default, Wyant said. Wyant agreed that Worland made the right decision to leave. Especially the way this winter season has been.

Overall, Wyant was happy with the way the team played in the games. Since none of these games were conference games it gave them the opportunity to try some different things and see how it would work.

“You can’t simulate a game in practice,” Wyant said. “Every game they got better and better.”

Wyant is hoping this new momentum will keep the girls moving in the right direction and help them with upcoming games.

“I just hope this momentum and desire continues,” Wyant said.
