Coach says more will qualify

At nearly halfway through the season, the Green River High School Outdoor Track and Field team has been blessed with good weather and great performances.

Despite a severe winter with a number of heavy snowstorms hitting the state, Hansen said his team has had a lot of opportunities to practice outdoors and compete. While the team has had to change meet plans due to weather, Hansen said he’s been surprised with how much time outside his team has had.

Weather can impact performances in track and field events, resulting in altered finishes. Hansen said it can change distances in jumps and throws, along with altering finish times in the running events. Most recently, the team dealt with 20-30 mph winds in Casper, with gusts of up to 50 mph. Despite heavy wind, the Wolves excelled.

“Our kids performed well. We had some personal bests set. It was nice to see our kids block out the wind and step up,” Hansen said.

So far, five students have prequalified for the State track meet at Kelly Walsh High School in Casper. Hunter Spartz has prequalified in shot put, Andrea Dewey in the 200 meters, Kyle Cacho in the 100 meters, Braden Reichl in the 800 meters and Erica Wilson in the high jump. Hansen said he expects others to prequalify soon, including Kaisa Arnell in the 3,200 meters and thinks the boys might be able to make State in the 4x800 relay.

He also said he believes students already prequalified for state will make the cut in other events.

While there’s a month left in the season, Hansen said there’s still work to do. He believes with tapering, the Wolves may have some surprising finishes in line for Regionals.
