Internship sends resident to D.C.

A Green River High School graduate will have the chance to intern for Sen. Mike Enzi in Washington D.C.

Alexander Marchal, a sophomore at the University of Wyoming, who is majoring in economics and finance and minoring in the honors program and mathematics, recently received news from Sen. Enzi’s office that he was selected for an upcoming internship.

This internship starts Jan. 4, 2017, and Marchal is looking forward to the experience.

Marchal heard about the internship program from a friend who had an internship the previous year and spoke highly about the program. Marchal thought it was something he would enjoy, so he applied for it.

According to Marchal, the extensive online application consisted of several short and essay-style questions. When Marchal finished the online application portion the was then required to provide two letters of recommendation.

When Marchal found out his application had been accepted, he was excited about the learning experiences he will have in Washington D.C.

“I can’t wait to go to D.C., this is a tremendous opportunity that I still can’t believe I got,” Marchal said.

“I’m expecting to get an in depth experience about the political process and what happens on Capitol Hill,” he said. “I believe this will be a tremendous experience that will both give me the unique opportunity to participate first-hand in the political process, as well as will give me countless networking opportunities.”

Some of Marchal’s duties while interning for Sen. Enzi, include a wide-range of office work, including sending out press releases. He will also have the chance to sit in on legislative hearings and write summary reports about those hearings for Sen. Enzi. He will also get to attend lobbyist parties and lead constituent tours of the Capitol. Marchal said if anyone from Green River schedules a tour with Sen. Enzi’’s office while he is the intern he will probably be leading that tour.

“I hope that I’ll take away a valuable life experience that also shows the real-world applications of what I have learned in the classroom at UW,” he said.

After graduating from UW, Marchal would like to attend graduate school in economics to become an economic analyst and policy advisor for the government.

“This will give me a taste of where I want to work; and also the opportunity to see what it’s like to work for the government and put me in a good position for the future,” he said.

In high school, Marchal was on the tennis team, speech and debate team, soccer team, and was a member of the National Honors Society. He also received a Congressional Award.

At UW, Marchal is the vice president of the club soccer team. He is a member of the tennis club, ski club, Iron Skulls Honor Society, Cardinal Key Honor’s Society, and a soccer coach for both the Laramie Blizzard Soccer Club and State Soccer Olympic Development Program.
