Boys and girls soccer at Green River High School won’t start until 2017, but soccer fans in Green River will soon have a chance to support the Western Wyoming Community College Mustangs.
The Mustangs will take on Salt Lake Community College Sept. 6 at Wolves Stadium. The men’s team will take to the field at 5:30 p.m., while the women will play at 7:30 p.m. The Mustangs will then host Snow College from Ephraim, Utah, at GRHS Sept. 9, with the men playing on the new turf field at GRHS at 3 p.m., while the women’s team will play at 5 p.m.
Green River talent can be found on both the WWCC men’s and women’s teams, as Tanner Trumble and Mackenzie Lucas signed on to the teams after their graduation from GRHS.
Lu Sweet, athletics director for WWCC, said the team usually plays on the field at Rock Springs Junior High, but with the new schedule at the junior high and conflicts with junior high football, WWCC needed to relocate a few of their matches.
While the team has played a few matches at Crossroads Park in Rock Springs and plans to play under the lights at Rock Springs High School, Sweet said she wanted to host a few games in Green River to both promote WWCC’s Green River Center as well as give residents who don’t watch WWCC sports in Rock Springs a chance to see the team in action.
“We’re Western Wyoming Community College, not Rock Springs Community College,” Sweet said. “I thought it would be a good opportunity to get (Mustang) soccer in Green River.”
Sweet would like to bring other sporting events to Green River in the future, though hasn’t been able to work out the details yet. However, WWCC has previously hosted basketball camps in Green River.
“We really want to bring Western soccer to Green River,” Sweet said.
