Wolves take Ron Thon tourney

It's been 13 years since Green River won the Ron Thon wrestling tournament in Riverton. This past weekend, the GRHS varsity wrestling team broke the streak, took first place and won the tournament.

"I am proud of the boys for winning the tournament," head coach Marshall Rhodes said. "Green River hasn't won that tournament since 2003 and that is a great accomplishment."

Green River entered 20 wrestlers into the varsity tournament, and placed first out of the 38 teams competing.

The tournament included all of the 4A and 3A teams from across Wyoming, plus many of the 2A division teams.

The finalists in the varsity tournament wrestled well this weekend against some very good competition and scored 106.5 of our 181 points.

"The finalists in the varsity tournament wrestled well this weekend against some very good competition and scored 106.5 of our 181 points," Rhodes said.

Rhodes said Green River is winning matches against other schools now that they've previously lost to earlier in the season. This shows the team's improvement, he said.

GRHS varsity wrestlers Gage Byers and Brendan Hopkins placed first. Cyro Montoya and Jordan Tucker placed second, and Caleb Nathan and Shandon Welsh placed in fifth.

The top ten teams in the tournament lead by Green River, were Green River with 181 points, Powell; 154, Gillette; 152, Star Valley; 144, Cheyenne East; 108, Worland; 106, Cheyenne Central; 91, Natrona; 90.5, Sheridan; 80, and Rock Springs with 76 points.

Green River will face Rock Springs tonight for their last dual of the season, before the state tournament.

"Rock Springs is a much improved team and I expect there to be some very good matches," Rhodes said.

"There are a couple of teams in the state that are capable of winning the state tournament at the end of February and we are one of them if we don't let up, continue to push, and improve in a couple areas we have been struggling in."

Green River's junior varsity wrestlers also competed in the tournament in their own division. GRHS junior varsity wrestlers took tenth place with 11 wrestlers, out of 41 teams competing.

Junior varsity wrestler Tanner Adam placed third, followed by Dominik Kobe in fourth, and Talbert Bowen in sixth place.

Rhodes knows their accomplishments at the tournament are good ones, but they still have their biggest feet of the season yet to come, which they need to diligently prepare for, State. The count down is on.

"They can be proud of what they've accomplished so far and the tournaments they have won this year," Rhodes said. "But we all know that they won't be nearly as special as winning the state tournament in three weeks."
