'Practice' continues for track

Green River High School’s indoor track team continues to perform well early in the season.

Last weekend, the team competed at Weber State in Ogden, Utah, a meet that head coach Steve Boyd said serves as another practice for the team.

Boyd said the early meets serve as a tool to help athletes condition themselves for more important meets like the state competition and the Simplot Games.

Kalen Kester excelled in the long jump for a second week in a row. Kester recorded a distance of 20 feet, 9 inches in the event, taking second overall. Boyd said he also cracked the top six in the sprint events. For the girls, Boyd said Josie Givens is running 3-4 seconds faster in her competitions than she did last year.

“Josie is ahead of where she was at this point last year,” Boyd said.

Boyd said everyone else continue to perform solidly. The team will again go to Utah this weekend to compete at the Kearns Olympic Ice Oval. Boyd said the track is a faster track for the team, but is also somewhat larger than tracks used at their previous competitions. The oval measures 440 meters. Boyd said the event in Kearns will also be the first time Green River can compete in the triple jump, saying he believes Drew Wilson should compete well in the event.

After competing in Kearns, the team will have a weekend off before competing in both the Utah Distance Challenge and the University of Wyoming meet.
