Lady Wolves continue to focus on offense

Chelsea Maes wins three-point contest

The Green River High School's Lady Wolves basketball team continues to struggle early in its season, losing each of their games during the Flaming Gorge Classic tournament in Green River.

During the tournament, the Lady Wolves lost to Lyman 46-33 Thursday, Worland 54-45 during overtime heartbreaker Friday, and to Pinedale in a close 40-37 game and to Mountain View 36-28 Saturday.

"We've got to get over that hump to a win," head coach Rick Carroll said.

However, despite those struggles, the team continues to improve. The Lady Wolves battled Worland to an overtime showdown Friday night. While both teams scored a basket during the 4-minute overtime period, the lady Wolves fell victim to penalties, giving the Worland squad ample opportunity to take the lead and game.

During their game with Pinedale, Carroll said the team did a great job keep up with the team, but were unable to capitalize on a number of opportunities that would have allowed them to take and keep a lead.

For Carroll, offence continues to be a major focus for the team. He believes a few of the players need to improve their confidence when attempting to score, as he notices girls not taking shots he believes they could make. Also, Carroll plans to continue working with the team and improving their shooting as they're also missing shots that they should make.

One bright spot for the team this weekend was Chelsea Maes' champion performance in the annual three-point shooting contest during the tournament. Maes, a senior, took home the trophy after scoring 18 points during the competition, tying with the maximum posted during the boys' competition. Scoring for the contest differed from normal 3-point baskets. Each basket made counted as a single point, while the fifth ball at each of the five shooting locations counted for 2 points. Carroll said the team voted Maes to represent them for the competition.

"Chelsea had a great night," Carroll said. "The team was excited for her."

As the winter break starts for students at GRHS, the team will continue to practice throughout the break and prepare for the Taco John's Invitational, which takes place Jan. 7-9 in Cheyenne.
