The Grinch who stole Christmas mail sought

Postal inspectors and the Green River Police Department are looking into a series of post office box break-ins at the Green River Post Office.

According to Pamela Durkee, a postal inspector with the United States Postal Service in Denver, less than 10 boxes had been broken into. Customers affected by the break-ins were notified Tuesday. Durkee said the break-ins occurred between 9 p.m. Monday and 5:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The locking mechanisms on the boxes were bent, causing the doors to be forced open. Durpee declined to discuss specific information, saying the incident continues to be under investigation. She said such crimes are uncommon, but do happen.

Durpee said the investigation is a high priority for postal investigators and urges anyone with information regarding the perpetrator's identity to call the postal inspection service at 307-772-7084. Durkee said if no one is available to answer the line, callers should leave a detailed message with contact information.
