Volleyball wraps up season in Casper

While the season ended in a way the Green River High School Volleyball team didn’t want, they left Casper with a few accolades and a strong base for the next season.

Going into the state tournament, Green River, seeded fourth in the west, was pitted against the first seed Cheyenne East team from the eastern half of the state in a Thursday afternoon match. Green River ultimately fell to East in three sets, which sent the Wolves to the losers’ bracket and a match against Sheridan. While the Wolves kept up with the Sheridan squad throughout the match, which included a close 33-35 loss in the second set, Green River ultimately lost their second match in four sets.

Despite the losses, head coach Rikki Shantz said the team is celebrating a good year and looks forward to the next season. The team had two members nominated for 4A all-state honors and three for all conference. Hattie Hix and Averee Cobb were named all-state while Mariah Morin joins Hix and Cobb on the all conference list. Cobb was also named the defensive player of the year for the 4A West.

“She has been rock solid in the back row,” Shantz said about Cobb. “She was always, always, always rock solid.”

Going into the off season, Shantz said the returning team members won’t be attending open gym and workouts until after the basketball season ends as a lot of the players participate in girls basketball. While the team will lose seven seniors, Shantz doesn’t see the upcoming season as a rebuilding year. The four girls returning to the team next year are strong players, though Shantz admits she needs to find a setter and a good defensive player for the 2016 season.
