Swimmers win conference

Earn first title since 1977

The Green River Girls Swimming and Diving Team were named the western conference champions last weekend during a meet in Riverton.

The last time the girls won the championship was in 1977.

"The girls swam pretty hard," head coach Colleen Seiloff said. "They swam solid ... everyone stepped up and contributed."

Seiloff said the team realized they were leading the competition late in the meet, but had to secure a win in the last event, the 400-meter freestyle, to win it all.

Seiloff said if a different combination of teams swam that last event, it would have been possible that Green River would have lost the event.

Overall, Seiloff said the team has time improvements across the board, though a few competitors did stand out.

Avery Otto-Horn took first in the 50-meter freestyle and the 100-meter fly events and the team won the 200-meter medley along with the 400 freestyle.

At the event, eight swimmers were named all conference. Swimmers Shyana Hunt, Ashley Jensen, Mckell Lyon, Emilee Mandros, Jarin Mandros, Dakota Newmann, Otto-Horn and diver Brianna Rath earned the all conference nomination.

Seiloff was chosen as the 4A Swimming and Diving Coach of the Year during the competition as well. While she is honored by the award, she readily admits it isn't just her work making an impact on the students.

"I have a great coaching staff. I'm lucky to have Randy Walker and Kayla Mahjanovich on my team," Seiloff said. "I've got a great group of girls too. I'm proud of how hard the girls worked this year."

Tomorrow, the girls travel to Rock Springs for the last chance meet before traveling to Gillette next weekend for the state championship competition.
