Thirty-two artists show off thier work at CFAC

The ninth annual Community Art Exhibit has opened with 32 local artists submitting 48 original pieces of artwork.

This year’s theme is “Art Squared” and will be on display through the end of the month at the Community Fine Arts Center.

As an open show, the submitted work is not judged or juried to be included.

“This year’s theme is concerning the format of the work. Compositions on canvases or paper were to be square as well as three-dimensional work follow that theme. A square format offers challenges with composition for the artist,” CFAC director Debora Soule, said. “As a community art show, it is open to any art medium and the goal is to provide local artists an opportunity to share their creative efforts with the public.”

Students from Black Butte High School entered watercolor and colored pencil assignments from their art teacher Shari Kumer.

Participating in the show are Anthony Adams, Kourtny Bachmann, Keeley Cooper, Jessica Favela, Lakaya Hamblin, Danielle Karnes, Jacob Leuis, Makayla Lowry, Danielle Machcinski, Jasmine Mariscal, Elizabeth Moore, Hailee Peterson, Raeden Shaw, Mercede Smith, and Savannah Waddoups.

Other young artists who were inspired to enter their original painting are siblings Bela and Varick Dittman.

Local art instructors Hallie Riskus and Jessica Jidas entered paintings in watercolor and acrylic, one is a mixed media piece which includes an actual spider’s web.

Traditional paintings by Angie Bennet, Darryl Newton, H. John Anderson and Debora Soule were joined by experimental paintings by Cherrie Dittman and Ellie Davis. Gwendolyn Quitberg shared her woodcut of a mother and child.

Local photographers Dave Metz, Jenni Knezovich, and R.J. Pieper entered some bold compositions with subjects ranging from old cars and a t-rex skeleton to a ballet dancer and a dog portrait.

Fiber artwork include Barbara Anderson’s counted cross stitch, a biscornu pincushion in blackwork stitching by Jennifer Messer, and two quilt designs by Diana Metz, all of which show the versatility of the artists in our community.
