Volleyball team defeats Natrona, Kelly Walsh

Green River High School’s varsity volleyball team is on a roll after defeating both Kelly Walsh and Natrona County High School last week.

The Lady Wolves won both matches in four sets. Against Natrona, the Lady Wolves won their first set against 25-22, but lost their second set, 23-25. The Lady Wolves came back in the final two sets, beating Natrona 25-23 and 25-20 to end the game.

During Saturday’s match against Kelly Walsh, the Lady Wolves dropped their first set against their opponents, 23-25. Green River came back in the following three sets, earning the win with 25-19, 25-21, 25-23.

With the earlier victory over Rock Springs two weeks ago, the Lady Wolves are on a three-game winning streak within the 4A conference. This weekend, they travel to Casper to take part in a tournament. Head coach Rikki Shantz said she looks forward to their match against Cheyenne East, the No. 1 ranked team in the state.

The Lady Wolves were seeded with Cheyenne East in the tournament and the upcoming match will give the team an idea of how they stack against the Lady Thunderbirds as well as where the team should make improvements.

Shantz credits the team’s successes with the individual team members’ varsity experience, as well as their desire to win.

“They want to win; they believe they can win,” she said.

Shantz also credits the team with improved hitting this year over previous years, which has helped them a lot.

Individually, Shantz said she’s impressed with Hattie Hix, Taylor Stoger and Avery Cobb. According to Shantz, Cobb has a great passing rate, averaging 2.24 out of a perfect 3 rating, while she said Stoger has excelled at hitting. Shantz said Hix has become a very smart player while she’s on the court.
