Farmers' market baked goods sell fast

Each week this past summer, the Golden Hour Senior Center volunteers attended the Green River Farmers' Market.

While at the Farmers' Market, the volunteers sold numerous baked goods including, apple and cherry turnovers, root-beer float cookies, orange cookies, lemon Rice Krispie treats, banana bread, zucchini bread and cinnamon rolls.

"It was fantastic," GHSC's Activities Coordinator Megan Brown said. "We made about $5,800."

She said they made an average of $600 every week and had repeat customers.

On some days popular items sold before 4 p.m. Brown said they often had returning customers asking about cinnamon rolls or apple turnovers, but those items were long gone.

All of the baked goods are made by the GHSC's baker Janice Castillion, who starts baking the goodies the Monday before the market.

"Nothing is pre-frozen, everything is made that week," Brown said. "She bakes her little heart out."

Sometimes the volunteers have to help Castillion box all of the items, before they are transferred to the market.

"It took all of our seniors volunteering to make it work," Brown said.

All of the money raised will go right back to the GHSC. This money will help the center pay for events, such as dances and dinners.

"I think if anything changes it would be to make more items," Brown said.

Residents who missed the opportunity to purchase some baked goods at the Farmers' Market, will be excited to know the GHSC will have a bake sale every fourth Thursday of the month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the GHSC.

Brown said folks who are looking for something in particular will want to visit the center before 10 a.m. that day or it will be gone. The Thursday bake sales were not hosted during the summer so all preparations can be made for the Farmers' Market.

It's a great way to get outsiders in the community into the center, Brown said about the bake sales. A lot of residents buy the baked goods with intentions of giving them to friends later.

"Almost all of our items you can freeze and save some for later," she said.
