Volleyball takes 2nd in tournament play

It was a weekend of déjà vu for the Green River Wolves Volleyball Team.

During the Labor Day weekend, the Lady Wolves (8-4) traveled to Gillette for the Camel Volleyball Tournament, where they once again fell to their first opponents, only to climb back through the tournament to the championship matchup.

At the start of the tournament, Green River was defeated 2-1 by a strong Rapid City, S.D. group from Stevens High School. Prior to the tournament, head coach Rikki Shantz said the school would prove to be a test for Green River as the South Dakota team often presses hard with a strong and fast offence. Shantz said the South Dakota team didn’t seem as tough as they have been in years past, saying Green River was able to keep up with them. In their sole victory over Rapid City, S.D. Stevens, Green River won out 32-30 in that set.

Their next two games against 3A Newscastle and Glenrock teams ended in the Lady Wolves’ favor with 2-1 victories against both opponents. Their performance placed them in the tournament’s silver bracket Sept. 5.

Green River’s day started against fellow a 4A Division team from Sheridan. The Lady Wolves defeated Sheridan 2-1 (26-24, 23-25, 25-17) and followed the victory up with a second against 3A Douglas 2-0 (25-15, 25-23). Their victories led them to the silver bracket championship game with 2A Wright. Shantz said Wright had pulled an impressive upset against 4A Natrona earlier in the day, beating the larger school 2-1. According to stats from Wyopreps.com, the Wright squad also defeated Cheyenne South earlier in the silver bracket matches and defeated Laramie and a team from Gering, Neb. the previous day.

Shantz said the sets between the two were close, but Wright was able to edge out Green River for the championship 2-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-23).

Shantz said the tournament gave the girls an opportunity to further work on a number of areas, while showing the girls that fighting to stay alive during a match can lead to a win. Green River will host Rock Springs Wednesday evening before hosting Natrona/Kelly Walsh Sept. 18.
