Swimmers start 2015 strong

With four members of the Green River High School Girls Swimming and Diving Team already qualified for the state meet in Gillette Oct. 30-31, the Lady Wolves have started the year off with a kick.

Regardless of those early successes, head coach Coleen Sieloff says she expects many more to make the cut by the end of the season.

“The girls are progressing quite well, I can tell some of them were in USA Swimming and active over the summer,” Seiloff said.

Seiloff said the girls continue to cut their times during their meets, with a few on the cusp of qualifying for state. Seiloff said the sport itself allows competitors chances to shine at any point in the season. Some swimmers tend to qualify early, she said, while others don’t start performing well until near the end of the season.

Seiloff said the group of girls is very versatile, though it’s still early to tell which events some of them will do best in. At the same time, Seiloff said that versatility leaves her options wide open as a coach.

The team competed in their first home meet Thursday night at the high school’s aquatics center against Lander. For the returning swimmers, this marked the first time they were able to compete in the new pool. That excitement, Seiloff said, helped propel the team to a victory over the Lander Tigers 95-91. Seiloff said Avery Otto-Horn, Ashely Jensen, Brianna Rath and Dakota Newmann set pool records that night.

She said the team continues to work on its technique and says the team is young with a great set of upperclassmen leaders.

“I’m looking froward to seeing what they can do at the end of the season,” Seiloff said.
