Events planned for teens

With the start of school comes fall activities provided by the library. We have weekly groups for teens in fifth through eighth grades (our Middle School group) and in ninth through 12th grades (High School Group).

This year’s activities for fifth through 8th graders are coming to them. Our Middle School group is meeting in the Lincoln Middle School Media Center right after school on the first, second and third Thursdays.

The High School Group also meets on Thursdays, at the library from 6- 7:30 p.m. Each week we’ll be playing board games, looking at new and popular books, watching movies, and/or finding out about homework help from the library.

The fourth Thursday activities will be at the library, these larger all-teen drop-in events from 3:30-7:30 p.m. -- and those aren’t the only activities we have going on for teens.

Meet us in the LMS Media Center after school on the first Wednesday of the month for the Middle School Advisory Board for seventh and eightth graders. The High School Advisory Board meets on the first Wednesdays at the library at 4 p.m. Both groups will have the opportunity and ability to plan events for teens at the library, and make suggestions for items to add to our collection.

The fourth Thursday events will appeal to a wide variety of interests. On Sept. 24, the library will host a Scary Story reception to celebrate the teen authors of scary short stories. Attendees will enjoy refreshments and be able to vote for their favorite story.

Amateur detectives are welcome to find a little excitement on Thursday, Oct. 22, where they will try to solve the murder mystery dinner theater. Actors are welcome to contact the youth services department to volunteer as suspects.

There will be one dinner from 3:30 to 5 p.m. for middle school students and one at 5:30 p.m. for high school students.

Oct. 29 is an extra Thursday and we’re taking advantage of the opportunity to host a Poetry Jam/Open Mic Night at 5 p.m. for high school students. Sign-up for performers is at 4:30 p.m.

On Nov. 19 we’ll be celebrating different cultures with food at our Eat It Up event from 3:30-7:30 p.m.

All of these activities take place either at the library or at a local school, with a library staff member in attendance. Library staff are committed to making these events a safe and fun place to be for students from fifth to 12th grade.

Library events are unique opportunities for teens for a number of reasons. All weekly events are drop-in, so they’re easier to fit into a busy school/sports/activities schedule. Each week allows teens to use the librarians as a gateway to all of the resources the library system has to offer, from Tutor.com to databases to DVDs.

New young adult books or materials will be brought to each weekly event so that teens can see exciting new releases and check them out if they have a library card.
