Checking up with library's summer reading program

So, it’s mid-July, that means the summer is more than halfway over. Kids here in Green River will be heading back to school in just five weeks. Where has the summer gone?

As we move into the second half of the season, it may be time to check in on your summer reading progress (and your kids’ summer reading progress). If you’ve signed up for the Sweetwater County Library System’s summer reading program, you would be right on track if you are halfway done with your reading log. For adults, that means you should have logged about two or three books so far. For kids that means about 500 minutes read. A lot of adults and kids have already finished and turned in their logs, and are working on their second round of reading logs – that’s pretty impressive!

If you haven’t started working on your summer reading yet, don’t worry, there’s still time. Our summer reading program runs through Aug. 15. You can still drop by and sign up, and register your kids as well. For kids, summer reading helps prevent the summer slide, meaning they are less likely to lose their reading skills over the summer and may actually gain some reading skills. For adults, reading in the summer (and anytime, really) helps keep your brain active, and helps reduce stress. Add to all of that the chance to win prizes, and there’s no reason not to be participating in the summer reading program. A special thanks to the Sweetwater County Library Foundation which provided the funding for our prizes this summer.

And speaking of summer reading, our Library in the Park, which is the summer reading program here in Green River, is still going strong. Bring your kids out next week to see Cat Urbigkit, the Wyoming nonfiction children’s author of “Brave Dogs, Gentle Dogs: How they Guard Sheep,” and “The Guardian Team: On the Job with Rena and Boo.” Urbigkit will be at Expedition Island at 11 a.m., July 22. If you can’t make it to her Green River event, she will also be at White Mountain Library at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. July 21 and at Rock Springs Library at 11 a.m. July 23.

Enjoy the rest of your summer, and don’t forget to fit in some reading time!

Check out our new self-checkout machines

It’s always exciting to bring new technology to the libraries. Our latest technology might just make your book checkout easier.

The library in Green River along with Rock Springs Library and White Mountain Library recently introduced self-checkout machines – one at each building. The machines are easy to use and are great to use it there’s a long line at the front desk, or if you simply want to privately check out your materials. You can check out any books, DVDs or CDS using the self-checkout machines.

Don’t worry, however, use of the self-checkout is just optional. Much like in the grocery store, it you prefer the staff to continue to check out your materials, they are there to assist you. They are also happy to provide book recommendations and help you look for your materials.
