Shirley Margaret Meeks

Shirley Margaret Meeks of Green River, passed away June 30, 2015 after a brief illness.  She was born Sept. 1, 1922 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada to Florence May Giffen and George Arthur Potts.

After the passing of her parents she was adopted by her mother's sister, Ethelwyn "Winnie" Bacon and her husband Carlos Bacon. She was raised and attended school in Jamaica, Queens, N.Y.

She met Henry Len Meeks in New York City during World War II. They were married July 23, 1944 in Queens, N.Y. before Henry was deployed to the Pacific theater and occupation of Japan. After the war they moved to the Meeks Ranch in Lonetree. Ranch life did not agree with her and they moved to Rhinebeck, N.Y. for the next 22 years.  When she was assured Wyoming was civilized enough for her they returned to Green River in 1967.

She enjoyed good books, geography, world history, skiing, fishing, good company and conversation and worrying about her grandchildren.  She loved the beauty of the American West and traveling it with her friends.  She was loved by her family and many friends.  She was employed as a secretary in Rhinebeck, N.Y. and worked as a waitress for the Holiday Inn in Rock Springs until her retirement.

She is survived by her three sons:  David M. Meeks of Saint Augustine, Fla; Donald R. Meeks and wife Patricia and Rick C. Meeks, both of Green River; six grandchildren:  Tyrone Meeks of Green River; Amber Meeks of Reno, Nev.; Danielle Keenan and husband Brian of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Jennifer Meeks-Lofton and husband Lance of Phoenix; Rene Meeks and Robyn Meeks, both of Grand Junction, Colo. She is also survived by three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services took place Monday.
