GR middle schoolers to put on play

See a unique version of “Cinderella” unfold on stage.

This Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m., Lincoln Middle School theater students will perform “Cinderella and the Substitute Fairy Godmother,” written by Ed Monk, who teaches theatre at Chantilly High School in Chantilly, Va. Tickets are $3. Children eight and under are free. Both performances will take place in the LMS theater.

Lincoln Middle School director Jessica Kidd said it is a funny story about what happens when the regular fairy godmother gets sick and a substitute has to go in her place to help Cinderella.

“Let’s just say everything that can go wrong, does go wrong,” Kidd said.

Beginning in January, the students met after school twice a week for about one hour and fifteen minutes to prepare for the play; however this week the students are meeting every day for two hours.

“They are really dedicated,” she said.

For most of the 12 students in the play, this is their first time being in a play.

“Most of them are liking it pretty well,” she said.

Others are learning just how much work being in a play is. They are having a difficult time making sure they are getting all of their other responsibilities, along with play work, done.

Kidd, who majored in theater at Brigham Young University-Idaho, knew the students would be challenged.

“I picked a play that I thought would be good for them now that they are starting out,” she said.

Kidd wanted to make sure the play was not too emotionally draining and fun for the kids. She feels this play was perfect for this task.

As for the set and costumes, Kidd said she couldn’t thank her husband and the participants’ parents enough. She said a lot of parents showed up to help when she and her husband were building the set.

She also wanted to thank those in the Green River High School theater department for all of their help. Kidd said they were allowed to borrow any costumes or props they needed for the play. She said the high school theater department even gave them a couch to keep.

“It’s so nice to live in a community that is so willing to come together and help,” she said.

This play is something families of all ages will enjoy.

“It’s hilarious,” she said.
