Green River hosts Natrona, Kelly Walsh

While first place in the 4A West standings will be on the line Friday afternoon when the Green River girl’s soccer team hosts Natrona, Green River head coach Tracy Wyant is more concerned about her team playing quality soccer.

“We try not to a lot of value into the standings. It doesn’t matter the team we are playing, we’re looking for quality soccer,” Wyant said.

Both teams will enter the 3 p.m. contest with unblemished 3-0 marks in conference play, but it won’t be their first matchup of the season.

Wyant said the two teams met in a jamboree game that featured 26-minute halves. Natrona won a tightly contested 3-2 battle.

The Lady Wolves go into the matchup 7-3 overall, while Natrona is 4-3. The game will take place at Wolves Stadium at 3 p.m.

Wyant said that while the team is trying to build off every game and learn, it would be a confidence boost to the team to beat a good Mustang team.

Green River will take on Kelly Walsh Saturday at Noon.

SOUTHWEST INVITE

Mother Nature couldn’t stop the Lady Wolves from a strong finish at the Southwest Invitational in Green River.

The squad opened the tournament will three consecutive victories before falling to Jackson 2-1 in the Gold Bracket finals.

Green River opened the tournament Friday in snowy conditions with a 3-0 victory over Lander.

Lauren Hoyt scored two first half goals and Taylor Stoeger added the third goal, also in the first.

In their final game of the day Friday, the Lady Wolves picked up a 13-0 thrashing of Rawlins. Hoyt once again led Green River in scoring, this time with a hat trick. Stoeger, McKenzie Lucas, and Chezney Mamalis each scored two goals. Lexi Vaught, Kelsey Moffitt, Payton Bartlett and Carolina Maestas each added one goal.

Wyant said the team played pretty good soccer Friday. She said with the snow and weather they had to adjust to the pace of the ball, but made the proper adjustments and played good soccer.

The Lady Wolves fell behind 1-0 in their semifinal matchup against Worland, but tied the game in the 34th minute on a goal by Lucas. Mamalis was able to secure the go-ahead goal in the 42 minute to seal the 2-1 victory.

Green River fell behind again in the finals against Jackson but was able to tie the game at 1-1 on a goal from Hoyt in the 48th minute, but couldn’t hang on and finished second with the 2-1 loss.

Wyant said that fatigue may have been a factor, but the team needed to clean some things up.
