When Green River High School boy’s basketball coach Dan LaRose took over prior to last season, he looked a five-year picture of building the program.
After the completion of his second season last week, LaRose said he’s starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel and they are looking towards goals they have implemented into their system.
The Wolves wrapped up their season 0-21, but as the season went on, the second-year coach said the team started to build confidence. The result of the confidence in the latter part of 4A West Conference play included two wire-to-wire affairs with Rock Springs and a near upset of a tough Evanston squad.
“It’s all about when you’re starting to play better and we started play better at the end of the season,” he said. “You’re always wanting to play your best basketball at the end of the season and we were.”
As far as the status of the program after year two, LaRose said they are sitting in a good place as far as philosophies and goals, but they will be getting a group of young kids coming in to the varsity level next season.
He stressed the importance of the offseason for the team and hopes it is a big piece of their plans.
“I think getting those kids in the gym in a structured setting early on and getting them to understand the level of play exponentially jumps from freshman to sophomore, from sophomore to junior varsity and than to varsity,” he said.
LaRose said there are a lot of talented players in the programs with good foundations to build on, they just need to get them stronger and ready for physical play.
Green River ended the season last Thursday at the 4A West Regional Tournament with a 66-45 loss to host Evanston.
It was the final game for seniors Kyle Gogilo, Chase Erickson, Tanner Trumble, Jayrn Johnson, Hayden Love, Luke Ferrell and Kody Leonard.
